Overview

Cookies are small text strings (usually consisting of letters and numbers) that allow a website to recognise a particular device or browser; in fact, these text files are sent from a website to the browser used by the user for browsing; subsequently they are stored on the user’s device (e.g. computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) and transmitted back to the same website during the user’s next visit.

There are different types of cookies, which express different characteristics and may be classified as:

  • session cookies, deleted immediately when the browser is closed;
  • persistent cookies, which remain inside the device, continuing to operate even after the browser is closed and until a certain period of time has elapsed;
  • first party cookies: cookies generated and managed by the owner of the website that the user is browsing;
  • third party cookies: they are cookies managed by a third party other than the owner of the website on which the user is browsing. The owner of the website that the user browses is not able to exercise specific control over these cookies. To obtain information on their characteristics and operating methods, please see the cookie policy established by the third parties. The use of third party cookies may normally be restricted by the user also through the specific options in their browser. For this reason, please see the instructions in the “cookie management” section.

Cookies are related to three functional macro-categories: technical cookies, analytical cookies and profiling cookies

  • technical cookies are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and to allow browsing; without them the browser may not be able to display the pages correctly or to use some services. For example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user connected during a visit to a website, or to memorise the language, display and other settings. The consent of the data subject is not required for purposes of installing and using technical cookies.

These cookies may be divided into:

  • browsing or session cookies (they guarantee the correct browsing and use of the website);
  • functionality cookies (they allow the user to browse according to a set of selected criteria – i.e. language setting – in order to improve the service provided).
  • analytical cookies.   These cookies are used to collect and analyse traffic and website usage. These cookies, even without identifying the user, allow, for example, to detect if the same user visits the website at different times. They also make it possible to monitor the system and improve its performance and usability. These cookies may be deactivated without any loss of functionality. If used anonymously, without allowing to be cross-referenced with data already obtained, and to collect information in aggregate form on the number of users and how they visit the website, they are categorised as technical cookies. In the latter case, the data subject’s consent is not required.
  • profiling cookies. They are cookies used to identify and track the preferences expressed by the user in the field of web browsing, allowing for example the sending of targeted advertisements. They are needed to create profiles concerning the user and are used to send advertising messages consistent with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing the Internet. The installation and use of these types of cookies requires the consent of the data subject.
